Warm sun and light breezes greeted those who attended Rye Conservation Society’s annual garden party last Sunday.

The walled garden of Little Orchard House in West Street was the venue for a gathering of around 90 people, who met for a chat and to meet old and new friends, as well as to enjoy a splendid cream tea.

Delicious scones served the Cornish way (jam first) had been lovingly baked by Pete Anderson, while Liudmyla Melnychenko treated guests to a traditional favourite from her homeland – Ukrainian blackcurrant tart!

While most were members of the society, people came from far and wide to enjoy one of central Rye’s larger gardens and to sample the refreshments – Holland, Portugal, France and Brazil as well as a group of three women from South Africa.

David Bookless, chairman of the society said: “We were delighted to see so many people, including the present MP Sally-Ann Hart and a previous MP for Hastings and Rye Jacqui Lait, and to have a chat with all and sundry. We were also pleased to sign up four new members to the society!”
